Earnhardt Fired Up About Fitting In With New Team
www.theledger.com/article/20080116/NEWS/820284554/1002/Sports
While 2008 may be his ninth full season on the NASCAR’s top circuit, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is once again the new kid on the block. After eight years of Sprint Cup (formerly known as the Nextel Cup) action for Dale Earnhardt Inc., the company started by his late father, Earnhardt Jr. is now the new face at Hendrick Motorsports. “There’s a little bit less pressure in certain areas and more pressure in other areas,” Earnhardt said of his new job behind the wheel of the No. 88 Chevrolet. “I didn’t have to worry about job security when I was over at my other job, but I’ve got to worry about that now. I think if I do what I’ve been doing, I should be fine. But with being the son of the guy who built the place, you can get away with a few more things than most guys could.” Earnhardt, 33, is doing his best to fit in at his new racing home.
Leffler finishes third but counts night as Chili victory
www.nascar.com/2008/news/headlines/cup/01/12/chili.bowl.friday.jleffler.kkahne/index.html
TULSA, Okla. — After Jason Leffler’s third-place finish in Friday night’s 25-lap Chili Bowl Midget Nationals qualifying feature, someone asked the Nationwide Series driver if it was the best race he’d ever lost. It wasn’t a smart-aleck question. After all, the car that passed him for the lead (and the eventual victory) with just four laps remaining belonged to Leffler himself, driven by his friend and employee Damion Gardner. “None of ‘em are good to loose,” Leffler said with a wounded grin. Then he brightened a bit, nodded in Gardner’s direction, and said, “But I was glad it was him.”

Texas Test Speeds Close To Last Year
Clint Bowyer was still coming off the corners in Texas going more than 200 mph. And from the first lap Tuesday, the car stuck going low into the first turn. “There’s definitely things that feel different, but I was pleasantly surprised, I really was,” Bowyer said during the first of a two-day tire test, and the first time NASCAR’s new cars ran at Texas Motor Speedway While the testing is primarily to provide Goodyear the basis to determine what kind of tire to bring for the Samsung 500 in April, Bowyer and Juan Pablo Montoya are getting the first chance to see how the new car — the former Car of Tomorrow — handles on the 1.5-mile, high-banked track. “It wasn’t far off [last year]. It was close. I think the race pace is really close,” said Donnie Wingo, Montoya’s crew chief. “It will get better when everybody gets used to working with it.”

NASCAR sources confirmed Wednesday that the sanctioning body is considering raising the minimum age for drivers racing in the Sprint Cup Series from 18 to 21. Currently, drivers must be 18 to compete in the Cup, Nationwide or Craftsman Truck series. If a change is made, drivers between 18 and 21 would remain eligible for Nationwide and Truck competition but would have to wait to make the move into stock-car racings top series. There are concerns that young drivers are being moved up through the ranks too soon, and that more time in the second-tier series would give them time to develop their skills on the track and to mature off of it. Such a change could, theoretically, also bolster interest in the Nationwide and Truck series, since it would ensure that promising young drivers could build fan followings and attract sponsorships while competing at those lower levels.(Thats Racin)(1-18-2008)

The bidding can be seen live on Speed. “We’re all excited about the opportunity to auction off The Intimidator, a very special Series 3 Camaro,” Childress said. “This car is about history and tradition, both in stock car racing and muscle car collecting.”(SceneDaily.com)(1-18-2008)
ISC Calls Denver Track Discussions “Preliminary”: NASCAR officials reiterated that they are exploring the possibility of building a racetrack development in the Denver area, but made no commitment to a partnership with the National Western Stock Show. “We know there is substantial demand for NASCAR racing in the Denver metropolitan region. As such, we continue to evaluate the possibility of pursuing a public-private partnership to develop a national-level motorsports entertainment facility in the market,” said Wes Harris, spokesman for Daytona Beach, Fla. - based International Speedway Corp. “While we have had preliminary discussions with a number of interested parties, including the National Western Stock Show, we are not involved in any negotiations at this time.” National Western officials this week referred to negotiations with ISC aimed at establishing a 1,000-acre complex near Denver International Airport and perhaps in Aurora that could host the stock show in January as well as auto-racing in warmer months and possibly sports training.(Denver Post)(1-18-2008)

A man accused of scamming the father of a NASCAR Busch Series driver out of hundreds of thousands of dollars was acquitted on Thursday. A jury of four men and eight women took approximately 8-1/2 hours to reach not-guilty verdicts for Malik Ibrahim on three felony counts of securing execution of a document by deception and one felony count of theft. Ibrahim still faces seven third-degree felony counts of aggravated perjury. The SCU claims he made ‘inconsistent statements’ in regards to whether he purchased plane tickets to Malaysia, owned a brokerage account, placed $200,000 in an offshore account and received a master’s degree from the University of Southern California in several pre-trial hearings for his criminal trial, according to grand jury indictments.(McKinney Courier-Gazette(1-17-2008)

Such a change could, theoretically, also bolster interest in the Nationwide and Truck series, since it would ensure that promising young drivers could build fan followings and attract sponsorships while competing at those lower levels. Joey Logano, who won the Busch East title at 17 in 2007, turns 18 on May 24 and is scheduled to make his Nationwide Series debut for Joe Gibbs Racing at Dover shortly after that. It is widely expected he would participate in at least some Cup events in 2009, but that could be prohibited if NASCAR goes through with the change in the age rule. (That’sRacin) (01-17-08)
NASCAR has issued two major rules changes for the 2008 Nationwide Series season, both designed to save teams money. The first is a tapered spacer on the engine that will be used at all The first is a tapered spacer on the engine that will be used at all non-restrictor-plate races. The spacer acts like a restrictor plate, cutting horsepower and extending engine life. The second is a hold on the brake package teams use, meaning no upgrades to brake systems will be permitted in 2008. Will Lind, who runs Richard Childress Racing’s Nationwide Series teams, says the brake rules are a “step in the right direction,” but other independent team owners disagree. The smaller teams couldn’t afford brakes that cost up to $25,000, already spending much less on brakes than some teams, so they argue there is no cost savings. “I wasn’t buying that stuff anyway,” Fitz Racing owner Armando Fitz says. “What is it saving us? [NASCAR is] saving Joe Gibbs and Roush and Hendrick. [NASCAR is] saving them money. None of the independent teams were buying that $25,000 brake system anyway.” Braun Racing owner Todd Braun agrees with Fitz, saying his team’s brake packages have stayed the same for three years, yet the team has consistently run well on tracks where brakes are important - such as short tracks like O’Reilly Raceway Park, where Braun driver Jason Leffler won last year. There is also disagreement over whether the new engine rules will save money. Braun says the engine might save his team 5 percent, and that’s not guaranteed. Team Rensi Motorsports President Ronnie Russell says teams will have to put all new bodies on the car to try to aerodynamically make up for the lost horsepower. But Fitz says an engine program this season will save him roughly $300,000. NASCAR Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash says the new engine rule gives “the garage a choice they didn’t have before.” (Scene Daily) (01-17-08)

Malsam, Cunningham Motorsports Bring Attention to Pacific Northwest
SEATTLE WA (1-17-08) - The Pacific Northwest is famous for many things - fresh seafood, seemingly constant rain, a fantastic music scene, jumbo jets, and who can forget a certain computer company.
Stock car drivers however are another story.
There are plenty of examples of great NASCAR drivers cut from the dirt tracks of the Carolinas, the cornfields of the Midwest, and the Saturday night circle tracks of Georgia. Even Southern California has churned out a few champions. It’s easy to understand when you look at the atmosphere. NASCAR in the South East is like hockey in Canada, every kid comes into contact with it at some point. And if you are growing up a race car driver in Alabama, you are probably setting your sights on Daytona.

SoBo, Southern National Champ gunning for rookie title with Ricky Benton Racing
Myrtle Beach, S.C.-Drew Herring knows how to win, and so does Ricky Benton Racing. Now, in 2008, the duo will combine their winning ways in hopes of grabbing the coveted Miller Lite Rookie of the Year title-and more-in the Hooters Pro Cup Series.
“It’s always exciting when you get to move up in racing,” said Herring, who won the Late Model title at South Boston in 2006 and the Southern National title in 2007. “But it’s really good to move up with a good team.”
And RBR is just that.
In 2002, RBR and driver Jason Sarvis won the overall Hooters Pro Cup Series title. In 2004, RBR and Matt Carter won the overall Miller Lite Rookie of the Year title together.
