Friends Ambush Johnson
Jimmie Johnson got a surprise wake-up call on his first morning as Nextel Cup champion. “Monday morning I was greeted at sunrise by my crew chief and a group of friends with a champagne spray,” Johnson said of the morning after his championship-clinching finish in the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. “My wife and I were asleep. I don’t know how in the world they got a room key.”

Big Losses For Big Three
The season ended on a high note at the appropriately named Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway as Roush Racing Fords swept the Cup, Busch and Truck series’ finales. On the other hand, Chevrolet won the Cup and Busch championships, while Toyota claimed the Truck Series title. Each of the Big Three — GM, DaimlerChrysler AG (Dodge) and Ford — reported third-quarter losses.

Steven Wallace To Run Snowball Derby
Steven Wallace, winner of the 2004 Snowball Derby, is bringing a part of the past this year. The son of retired NASCAR legend Rusty Wallace will drive for Ritchie Wauters and will have a special sponsor. Southland Fire & Equipment Company of Baton Rouge, La., will be on the car. The company was Rusty’s sponsor during 1980s when he raced in the Snowball Derby.

eBay Auction For St. Jude
AutoZone and ppc Racing are saying “Thanks” and “Giving” back to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital this holiday season. Last weekend at the season-ending Busch Series race at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, the No. 22 AutoZone car, driven by Kenny Wallace, was decked out in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Thanks and Giving campaign. A replica hood from the AutoZone car was autographed by all the (43) drivers in the Ford 300. Currently the hood is up for auction on eBay and the proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Mars To Back No. 88?
It’s expected another Mars candy brand (will sponsor the No. 88). Yates’ No. 38, driven by David Gilliland in the second half of the season and returning next year, is sponsored by M&Ms. It has two more seasons on its contract with Yates. “Everything is agreed to and we’re good to go,” Yates said. “I didn’t know about this until recently. Things were up in the air and that was making me look at a lot of different things, but I’m so happy and excited that we’ve got an opportunity to get our act together and I believe we can.” Mars undoubtedly got a sweetheart deal. Ford couldn’t afford to lose another team and, despite the company’s overall financial problems, is probably paying a large chunk of the tab

Looks Like Sauter For No. 88
The stars appear to have lined up perfectly for Johnny Sauter to drive Robert Yates Racing’s No. 88 Ford Fusion in the Nextel Cup Series next season. Sauter has the inside track to the only car without a driver in the top 35 in the Nextel Cup owner points, guaranteeing a position in the Daytona 500 and the next four races in 2007. Yates is also talking to Ricky Rudd, who doesn’t want to compete full time. Unless Yates can induce the 50-year-old Rudd into changing his mind — and it seems unlikely — the No. 88 belongs to Sauter. They’re the only two drivers under consideration.

Bobby Allison To Make Canada Appearance
Legendary NASCAR driver Bobby Allison will appear at the Ancaster Wal-Mart Supercentre on Friday, Dec. 1 to launch NASCAR The DVD Board Game. He will meet with fans for an autograph signing from 6:30-8 p.m. The Canadian creators of the game, from Specialty Board Games (SBG), will also be on hand.

Stewart Races Turkey Night
Two-time NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion Tony Stewart made a surprise appearance in the 66th running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Irwindale Speedway on Thursday night. Well, maybe it was a surprise to those who don’t see him every weekend. Casey Mears, a driver on the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series who was entered in the USAC Midget and Sprint car races at Irwindale, said he knew Stewart was planning on racing in the Turkey Night GP after the Cup season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It appears Mears was one of the select few who knew. “I’m never surprised to see him at a Sprint car or Midget car race,” said Mears, “Are you?” Those late getting to the track might have been. Stewart spent the afternoon putting down test laps, but made no indication he was racing until he took his car out for qualifying. It turns out Stewart was trying to make his first USAC race of the year. Not that he has much time for USAC racing with his NASCAR schedule. But he owns a Midget team and apparently decided a week ago to race his own car in the traditional USAC event that is run on Thanksgiving.

“Dale: The True Story” Due Before Daytona 500
The latest movie about the late Dale Earnhardt is scheduled for release early next year. “Dale: The True Story” was produced by NASCAR Images and CMT films. Unlike an earlier ESPN movie, this one has the approval of Earnhardt’s family. The 90-minute film is narrated by Paul Newman. There is some debate whether the film is actually a movie or more of a documentary.

Johnson to run ROC in Paris: The organizers of the 2006 Race of Champions – Nations Cup, a unique and spectacular competition that opposes motor sport champions and superstars from across the world, are delighted to confirm the return of NASCAR superstar Jimmie Johnson and multiple X-Games Champ Travis Pastrana to spearhead the USA’s bid to win the coveted Nations Cup. Johnson, currently 2nd in Nascar’s title Chase and winner of both this year’s Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400, was a member of Team USA in 2002 that claimed America’s first Nations Cup title in the Canary Islands with teammates Jeff Gordon and Colin Edwards. The 31-year old Californian will participate in his third ROC event (2002 and 2004) and return to the Stade de France in Paris on December 16. Other drivers that have committed to participate in the 2006 ROC event include Formula 1 stars Jenson Button, David Coulthard, Rally World Champions Sebastien Loeb, Marcus Gronholm and Colin McRae, Dakar Champion Stephane Peterhansel, World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx, DTM Champion Bernd Schneider, 7-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, Champ Car Champion Sebastien Bourdais, etc. For more information on Race of Champions please visit www.raceofchampions.com.(11-27-2006)(ROC PR)

Ganassi Racing Development Driver Nominated for Award: Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) development driver and USAC National Sprint and Midget Car Series star Bryan Clauson was recently nominated for RACER Magazine’s Rookie of the Year Award which will be presented during this year’s SPEED Performance Awards. Clauson’s nomination pits him against the best young talent motor racing has to offer worldwide, as evidenced by the selections of Marco Andretti (Indy Racing League), Colin Braun (Grand American), Dan Clarke (Champ Car), Denny Hamlin (NASCAR) and Robert Kubica (Formula One). At just 16 years of age, Clauson (now 17) became the youngest driver in USAC history to win both a National Sprint Car Series and National feature Midget race- topping a list of USAC’s all-time greats including Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart. After an injury in September in Wheatland, Mo. sidelined him for the remainder of 2006, Clauson still finished in the Top 10 in both Sprint and Midget points. He also won selected USAC Regional Midget Car Series events in 2006. The RACER Rookie of the Year winner will be featured in the April edition of the magazine. Beginning this week, SPEED will present nominees for the fan-vote categories, allowing viewers to vote for their favorites at SPEEDtv.com. The winners will be announced as part of a 60-minute special in February.
Also, CGRFS recently signed 16-year-old open wheel standout Brady Bacon to the team’s driver development program. Bacon has been the feature driver at Keith Kunz Motorsports, filling in for Clauson as he continues to recover from his aforementioned accident. Bacon is the 2006 Southern Midget Racing Series champion, and recently finished third in the USAC National Sprint Car race in his first outing at Eldora Speedway in Ohio.(Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates PR)(11-27-2006)

More on Sauter to the #88, or will it be Rudd?: The stars appear to have lined up perfectly for Johnny Sauter to drive Robert Yates Racing’s #88 Ford Fusion in the Nextel Cup Series next season. Sauter has the inside track to the only car without a driver in the top 35 in the Nextel Cup owner points, guaranteeing a position in the Daytona 500 and the next four races in 2007. Yates is also talking to Ricky Rudd, who doesn’t want to compete full time. Unless Yates can induce the 50-year-old Rudd into changing his mind — and it seems unlikely — the #88 belongs to Sauter. They’re the only two drivers under consideration.(CNNSI)(11-25-2006)

Mears and National Guard in Turkey race: while not yet confirmed, it was reported a while back that the National Guard sponsorship would move from the #16 Greg Biffle Ford to the #25 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy that Casey Mears will drive in 2007. It has been reported that Mears drove a sprint car at Irwindale Speedway in the Turkey Night Grand Prix and was sponsored by the National Guard and he was wearing a National Guard/GMAC Hendrick firesuit. It was recently announced that the National Guard would not return to the #16 [Ameriquest and 3M will sponsor Biffle in 2007](11-25-2006)

BAM Racing to return in 2007, Bliss to drive? Although the Beth-Ann Morgenthau/BAM Racing owned operation haven’t confirmed their driver for the #49 whatsonline.com Dodge for 2007, team manager Eddie Jones and current crew chief David Hyder, as well as the primary sponsor, have all been confirmed for the 2007 season. With Mike Wallace, Chris Cook, Kevin Lepage and Mike Bliss all spending time behind the wheel of the #49 Dodge during the course of the year following Brent Sherman’s departure, consistency was a major problem for the team in 2006 and it was no surprise to see the team finish 40th in the final team standings having failed to qualify for eleven of the 36 races.(in part from Crash.net)(11-25-2006)

Tragic News: A Kansas woman and her teenage son have died in a wreck on Interstate 85 in South Carolina. Daniel John Becker, 19, of Mooresville, N.C., was driving south at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, when a northbound tractor-trailer crossed the median, went through the barrier cables, and hit his car nearly head-on, troopers said [Becker worked in Concord NC at the Fast Track Driving/Racing School]. Pamela Becker, of Milford, Kan., was taken to the hospital, where she died Thursday from head injuries. The tractor-trailer also hit two other vehicles, but no one else was seriously injured, authorities said.(Topeka Capital-Journal)(11-25-2006)

Ince gets married and starting own team: Retired and former Nextel Cup Crew chief James Ince was married today at the Elvis Presley Chapel in Las Vegas Nevada. Mr. Ince wed Jennifer Kendelhard, 33 of Charlotte, NC. The couple reside in downtown Charlotte, NC and own Graceful Properties, a real estate investing firm in Charlotte together. James Ince Motorsports is planning on running a limited ABC [ARCA, Busch, Cup] race program in the second half of the 2007 race season, with a young developmental driver from the state of Missouri. Further information will follow as sponsors are put into place.(11-24-2006)

Auto Racing Recap – 2006

Tony Fabrizio/The Tampa Tribune

History Not On Johnson’s Side
Star players get old, smart general managers and coaches move to losing teams, and the balance of power shifts in professional sports.Theoretically, it should work that way in NASCAR, too. Yet it hasn’t.

http://whatcounts1.mediageneral.net/t?r=9&ctl=5F33F:2615C

Mike Mulhern/Winston-Salem Journal

Johnson, Knaus Patched Up Differences To Win Title
For all his outward calm, Jimmie Johnson had been a basket case the past few weeks as he came down the stretch of the Chase for the Nextel Cup. The championship carrot dangling in front of him for four years had been just out of reach each time.

http://whatcounts1.mediageneral.net/t?r=9&ctl=5F32B:2615C

Fans Yawning As NASCAR Loses Its Zest
Oooh, now that was some way to slap an exclamation point on a season. On the same weekend as Ohio State-Michigan, Colts-Cowboys and Chargers-Broncos — on the same weekend, in other words, of electric happenings and soaring Nielsens — Jimmie Johnson led two laps at Homestead and otherwise Sunday-drove his way to a title Man, that Brian France (right) sure knows how to throw a judgment-day party, doesn’t he?

2006 Tribune Awards

DRIVER OF THE YEAR: Jimmie Johnson won the two most prestigious points races, the all-star race and the championship. The runner-up is Kevin Harvick, who won the Busch Series by a staggering 824 points and finished fourth in Nextel Cup.

TEAM OF THE YEAR: Richard Childress Racing, dramatically improved over 2005, placed Harvick and Jeff Burton in the Chase and dominated the Busch series with Harvick.

CREW CHIEF OF THE YEAR: This one’s easy. Veteran Mike Ford led rookie Denny Hamlin (right) to two victories, a Chase berth and a third-place finish in the points.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Hamlin, hands down.

MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR: Chevrolet won 23 of the 36 Nextel Cup races, a record in NASCAR’s modern era (1972-present).

BEST RIVALRY: Matt Kenseth spun out Jeff Gordon on the last lap of the Food City 500 at Bristol in March, costing him a third-place finish. When Kenseth tried to apologize afterward, Gordon shoved him in a scene that played repeatedly on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” NASCAR hit Gordon with a fine and probation, but Gordon got even in July at Chicagoland Speedway when he knocked Kenseth out of the lead with four laps left in the U.S. Sheetrock 400. Gordon won the race, and, despite Kenseth’s protests, wasn’t penalized.

GM Rookie Success Points to Future
Racing is mostly about the here and now.
But the season-ending NASCAR Nextel Cup race in Miami gave Chevy reason to be very optimistic about the future as well. Monte Carlo SS driver Denny Hamlin finished third in the race and more importantly third in the Nextel Cup championship, easily winning Rookie of the Year honors. He won two races during the season (both at Pocono) and ran strong on a consistent basis, especially for his first full season.

Edwards Striving For “Ultimate” Scenario

Roush Racing’s Carl Edwards finished third in the point standings during his rookie season of 2005. He just wrapped up a runner-up finish nearly two weeks ago in what marked his second year of competition in the Busch Series. So what’s next for Edwards? If the number trend continues, he could be the 2007 Champion. At least, that’s what he plans on despite the back and forth disarray of running both the Nextel Cup and Busch Series.

“I’ve had a good time this year, so I’m gonna do it again. The mission for me is to win both championships in one year and I think that would be the ultimate in American motorsports for me,” he says. (Read More)

SPEED reported during their pre-race show on Sunday that Mark Martin may be running some Busch events next season with Hendrick Motorsports. Hendrick was previously rumored to be running two partial Busch programs next year with Kyle Busch and Casey Mears. (11-19-06) AND: The team is talking with Martin about driving one of its Busch Series cars next season, but nothing has been decided, according to a statement released by Hendrick General Manager Marshall Carlson. Martin is leaving Roush Racing’s Ford operation to join Ginn Racing’s Chevy team in 2007. Ginn and Hendrick have a working relationship, and Ginn is also entering the Busch Series next year. Hendrick has had as many as three cars in the Busch Series this season, with Kyle Busch driving the No. 5 for nearly the full season, Brian Vickers and Adrian Fernandez driving the No. 57 in 10 total races and Jimmie Johnson in the No. 48 in three races. Busch and Casey Mears, who joins Hendrick’s Cup operation next season, are likely in the mix for Hendrick in the Busch Series next year, though plans have not been announced.(Scene Daily) (11-23-06)

Biffle wants to change way Cup drivers qualify for Busch races: Greg Biffle has an idea regarding the wave of Nextel Cup Series drivers doing double-duty in the Busch Series: Make all of them qualify on speed. Biffle was one of eight drivers moonlighting in the junior circuit this year. Cup drivers accounted for 34 of the series’ 35 wins, prompting complaints throughout the garage area. “If I were in charge, I’d make the Cup guys have to race their way into the lineup,” he said. “That way there wouldn’t be more than 13 in any race.” NASCAR locks the top 30 drivers into each starting lineup. The other 13 spots are given to the fastest drivers in time trials. At the same time, Biffle said the Busch Series needs the Cup drivers to make the main event interesting.(Augusta Chronicle)(11-24-2006)

Bowsher’s First Car….a Ford; Imagine That…
Jack Bowsher gave nearly 60 years of his 75 year-old life to racing. His first racecar he built was this 1938 Ford Standard Coupe that bears the name of the town he came from. The last racecar he built was a 2005 Ford Taurus. Through it all, he remained loyal to the Ford brand, and was one of Ford’s first stock car factory drivers under the Holman Moody banner throughout the late 60s and 70s. Even long after the Ford factory support went away, Jack never forgot the company that helped give him wings. The legend from Harmony, Ohio has 75 career championship victories in ARCA and USAC stock car competition, and 7 car owner crowns, one with AJ Foyt at the helm in ’68.
